Comparison of Augmented Reality-Based Training and Conventional Exercise Therapy on Patients after Knee Surgery

Abstract
Purpose This study aimed to compare the effect of a combined Augmented Reality (AR)-Based training and conventional training with a single conventional physical therapy on rapid knee recovery of patients after surgery.

Methods: Fifty (50) patients with total knee replacement and anterior cruciate ligament surgery were recruited and randomly assigned either to study group (conventional training plus AR-based training) and control group (conventional training). The Goniometer was used to measure knee joint flexion, extension range of motion and the visual analog scale (VAS) was used to assess pain. We used the manual muscle test system to measure knee flexor and extensor muscles. The measurements were conducted before surgery, after surgery and after intervention. The intervention was conducted in a total period of 6 weeks. The one-way Repeated ANOVA was performed to see the before-and-after differences between the two groups and the paired sample t-test to analyze the changes within groups.

Results: We observed a significant difference in all measured outcomes after the intervention in both groups (p<0.05). However, there was not a significant difference between the two groups for the muscle strength, and pain (p>0.05) with exception of range of motion which was significantly increased in the study group (p<0.05).

Conclusion: Therefore, according to these results, the addition of ARbased training to the conventional training program is more effective than the conventional training alone and may be use for a rapid recovery of patients after knee surgery.
